Kovachevtsi municipality is located in the western part of the country. It is at a distance of 60 km south-west from the capital of Bulgaria - Sofia and 25 km in the same direction from the town of Pernik. Several archaeological findings in the region of Kovachevtsi reveal human activity since the begging of our era.
The population of Kovachevtsi municipality increased significantly right after the Russian-Turkish war of liberation and also after the Kresnensko-Razlojko rebellion. Among the many refugees at that time were Paraskeva Doseva and Dimitar Trenchev – the parents of Georgi Dimitrov. Later on Kovachevtsi became a birthplace for him. This event made Kovachevtsi popular in Bulgaria. On the occasion of 75 years of Georgi Dimitrov’s death a memorial building was opened in 1957.
There are three museum collections at the territory of Kovachevtsi municipality – in Kovachevtsi, Lobosh and Svetlia villages. The municipality has also three churches.
On the 13 and 14 January is the official holiday of Kovachevtsi municipality. On this holiday people dress themselves with mummer costumes. There are also survakari - these are boys going from house to house and wishing people Happy New Year and dispelling evil spirits from their houses.
In Kovachevtsi is located the National children’s ecological complex (NCEC). It is situated in a high eco-friendly environment. It is the only one of its kind in Bulgaria. The complex offers excellent conditions for rehabilitation, rest and sports for children and students.
Close to the NCEC is Pchelina Lake, offering opportunity to try fishing, surfing and rowing.
